“Summer Cottage” Beats Out 149 Entrants in Architects Challenge Showdown
San Francisco-based design firm VIF Studio, under Principal Lian Eoyang, Associate IIDA, won the 2014 Marvin Windows and Doors Architects Challenge Showdown, beating out 149 other entrants. Over the course of five weeks, the public was tasked to vote on which inspiring project deserved recognition as Showdown winner. The project with the most votes won. The result: Designer Eoyang’s “Summer Cottage.”
“Summer Cottage” is a formerly dilapidated cottage along the Boston Harbor that VIF Studio razed and built anew using hand-cut fieldstone. Faced with strict zoning height restrictions, the hillside location was leveraged to build a two-story home that features raised ceilings and full-length windows, creating beautiful 180-degree panoramas of the harbor and skyline. Lian Eoyang sourced Marvin Windows and Doors to provide uncompromised views and a transparent barrier from the rugged terrain. The choice of windows were balanced by modern lines and historic New England heritage for a sophisticated, minimalistic look that also promises high performance under the harshest weather conditions.
In addition to being crowned Showdown winner, Lian will receive a trip to the 2015 Reinvention Symposium in Washington D.C., a high level design conference for housing professionals produced by Residential Architect magazine. Interface Asks IIDA Members to Join in Green Apple Day of Service
Launched by the United States Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools in 2012, the Green Apple Day of Service is a global volunteer effort that gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects, targeted at the last Saturday in September.
At the heart of Green Apple is the need to redesign our learning environments. Who better to lead this effort than interior design professionals? In 2013, Interface and IIDA began our collaboration to apply design solutions to learning environments. The talent, passion, and professionalism of IIDA members brought a deeper dimension to our Green Apple Day of Service projects. Through classroom makeovers and design charettes with high school students, these rewarding experiences brought fun and purpose to our work as design professionals. We look forward to an expanded collaboration in 2014 to show our kids that they deserve better, and that where they learn matters.
