Save the Date: IIDA Student Design Competition Opens Nov. 12
The Student Design Competition celebrates original design and rewards individuals and/or teams whose projects demonstrate innovative, functional design solutions that have a positive environmental and human impact. This year, students are asked to investigate how the modern employee works and what elements are required to increase workplace well-being , increasing productivity and job satisfaction. Specifically, students are invited to think about how a well-designed office can foster workplace well-being, factoring in mobility, privacy, natural light, exercise opportunities, and outdoor access. The competition opens next week on Wednesday, Nov. 12, with the competition brief available for download here. Winners will be announced in the February 2015 issue of Quad and featured in DesignMatters and the IIDA website.
IIDA Global Excellence Awards Competition Open
Submit your projects to the 5th annual IIDA Global Excellence Awards. This annual worldwide design competition was established to honor and celebrate outstanding originality and excellence in the creation of international Interior Design/Interior Architecture projects in 13 categories. All winning projects will be featured on the IIDA website. The Best of Competition winner will be selected from the category winners and announced at a reception at Maison & Objet in Paris on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Congratulations to the Winners of the 2014 IIDA/Contract Magazine Booth Design Competition and the EDspaces Innovation Awards
Last week, IIDA crowned the winners of the 10th annual IIDA/Contract Magazine Booth Design Competition at NeoCon East in Baltimore, and the 2nd annual EDspaces Innovation Awards at the EDspaces tradeshow in Tampa. Top honors for the 2014 IIDA/Contract Magazine Booth Design Competition went to Global (pictured top left) for Large Booth (over 400 square feet) and Bentley 2014 for Small Booth (under 400 square feet). Competition winners were presented with certificates during NeoCon East at the Baltimore Convention Center on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Winners of the 2014 EDspaces Innovation Awards were announced Thursday, Oct. 30, with Best of Competition honors awarded to Borgo Contract Seating for their product, Privee seating (pictured bottom left).
The IIDA/Contract Magazine Booth Design Competition seeks to honor originality of design, visual impact, effective use of materials and the outstanding use of space, color, texture, lighting, and graphics in booths at NeoCon East 2014. The EDspaces Innovation Awards recognizes manufacturers and designers for excellence in product design for the learning environment.
IIDA Partners with Designs for Dignity to Boost National Efforts to Help Local Nonprofits
IIDA is excited to announce a new national partnership with Designs for Dignity (D4D) a provider of pro bono design initiatives to nonprofit organizations that serve marginalized and at-risk individuals. This partnership seeks to expand D4D’s national programs throughout the United States and give IIDA Members the opportunity to engage in hands-on local revitalization projects while gaining Continuing Education Credits.
D4D, established 15 years ago and headquartered in Chicago, is looking for project participation in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, and Pittsburgh. Upcoming city projects include the Youth on Fire and Harvard Square Homeless Shelter in Boston, and the International Rescue Committee and Our House Shelter in Atlanta. IIDA Members, vendors, and manufacturers are encouraged to provide in-kind donations, pro-bono design work, and corporate support to D4D’s growing national efforts.

IIDA President Elect Recaps “The Culture of Work”
IIDA President Elect Scott Hierlinger, IIDA, LEED AP, ID+C (Principal and Design Director, NELSON), shared his insights from this year’s ORGATEC on the NELSON website. Hierlinger, and Members of the IIDA International Board of Directors, participated in the panel discussion “The Culture of Work: A Global Perspective,” which took place at ORGATEC in Cologne, Germany. Of the discussion, Hierlinger said it “illuminated the similarities that the United States market shares in regards to what clients want, the expression of brand, and our approach to those.”
IIDA Foundation 2014 Designing for the Future Campaign
IIDA Foundation Trustees are pleased to announce the launch of the 2014 Designing for the Future Campaign, which opened Oct. 1, and will continue through Dec. 1. The funds raised from this year’s campaign will provide funding for the NCIDQ Tuition Reimbursement Fund and support the Council for Interior Design Accreditation in developing accreditation standards for 2014 – 2015. To date, 117 IIDA Members have received financial assistance from the Foundation upon passing the exam.
CEU Compliance Reminder
Professional and Associate Members are reminded that they are required to complete 1.0 CEUs (10 contact hours), by the end of Dec. 31, 2015. IIDA will be conducting a mid-compliance period audit at the beginning of 2015 to inform eligible members of their CEU status. To be on track you should have accumulated at least 0.5 CEUs (5 hours) by Dec. 31, 2014. To check your CEU status, log in to your profile at IDCEC. NeoCon Invites You to Submit Your Program Ideas for 2015
NeoCon, North America’s largest design exposition and conference for commercial interiors for more than 45 years, officially announced the call for presentations for NeoCon and NeoCon East 2015 live on its website. NeoCon and NeoCon East are seeking industry experts to share professional insight and knowledge with commercial and residential interior design, as well as architecture and facility management professionals. Program proposals for NeoCon have already passed. However, NeoCon East will be accepting proposals until April 1, 2015.

Two scholarship opportunities for 2015 from Gensler are open. The Gensler Diversity Scholarship celebrates diversity through mentorship and empowerment of the best emerging design talent. Top African-American students who will be entering their final year of a U.S. not-for-profit NAAB-accredited architecture program in the fall of 2015 are encouraged to apply. The Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship was established as a memorial to Don Brinkmann, an inspirational and gifted interior designer. Top students entering their final year of a U.S. not-for-profit CIDA-accredited interior design program in the fall of 2015 are encouraged to apply. Deadline for both scholarships is Dec. 8.
